A Date with Dorie

Dolores “Dorie” was the recipient of my contest I had for a free elderly session to honor my late grandmother Lorraine. With today being National Grandparents day I figured it was a perfect day to remember my Nana and feature another.

If I am being completely honest I was a little nervous to meet Dorie. According to her granddaughter Kristi, Dorie was very reluctant about the session and went on and on how she hates having her picture taken. To my surprise Dorie was an absolute doll and welcomed me into her home with pleasure. Her home was cozy and inviting, sprinkled with flowers and pictures of her family.

At 82 years young she still has a vibrance to her. Maybe it’s because she is out every day doing yard work or the fact that she was never a smoker or drinker. Dorie is from Nova Scotia, born on June 13, 1933 the youngest and only survivor of 13 children. She lost her husband of 58 years 2 years ago but still has a positive outlook on life and lots to live for especially her 2 children, 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Dorie was such a good sport answering all my questions and I like to think she was having a good time.DSC_3080bw

I mean does this expression not scream I’m having a blast!

Of course I had to put a flower in her hair:)

My favorite thing about this session was just sitting and chatting with Dorie and watching her light up as we talked about her past. Every elderly person has a story to tell, they are the ones that have already truly lived life. So my homework to all of you today is to sit with your grandparents, ask them questions and listen – you’ll love what you hear, i promise!
